NEON black
With a certain amount of masochistic anticipation, every year I look forward to the beginning of spring. Every March brings with it the dirty, boggy state of the off-season — a time when the rivers of mud spill through the city streets, evoking an overwhelming sense of anxiety and disorder in the body.
As an artist, I seek balance, and endeavor to oppose the darkness and amorphousness of the season with alluring texture and color. The name of the series, Neon Black, speaks to the interaction of two incomparable elements: neon emitting light and blackness absorbing it. The matte, dark surfaces of the objects within this series are not capable of reflecting light, and are thus complemented by ironic, bright, and seemingly luminous elements that attract tactile contact. Through this transition, I invite the viewer to peaceful coexistence with the foreign, and to engage in a playful and non-resistant dialogue with their desires. I am creating an attractive and shaped reality. As I continue to work within this series, I once again find myself seeking cover and shelter, even if it is only an illusion or a futile attempt to see the neon glow in blackness.
